Questions, answered.
The things people ask most. If yours isn't here, write to hello@thinkblot.app.
The basics
- What does it run on?
- iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 27.1 or later, including iPhone Duo, plus Mac and Apple Vision Pro. It's made for Apple Pencil. Some reading features need Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings.
- Is it a subscription?
- No. One purchase covers your devices on the same Apple Account. There's no subscription, no account and no ads.
- Does it work offline?
-
Yes. Writing, reading your handwriting, voice-note transcription, math and the blots all work on the device, with no connection.
A few things need one: syncing to your other devices, Private Cloud Compute if you've turned it on, forecasts, place names, link previews and Wikipedia lookups. They catch up when you're back online.
- Where are my notebooks kept?
- On your device, and in your own iCloud through Apple's private CloudKit database. Sign in to the same Apple Account with iCloud on, and your notebooks stay the same on every device. There's no Thinkblot server, so we can't see them. To keep a copy elsewhere, export a notebook as PDF or Markdown.
Writing and reading
- Do I need an Apple Pencil?
- It's made for one, and it's best with one. You can write with a finger too: turn on "Write with a finger" during setup or in Settings.
- What are the blots?
-
When Thinkblot can help with a line, a small blot of ink appears at its end. Tap it, and the line becomes what it asks for: a reminder, a drafted message, a payment, time on your calendar. Nothing happens until you tap, and nothing is sent until you send it.
Each notebook decides how much it reads: Paper (nothing marked), Tasks or Everything.
- It misread a word. Will fixing it change my ink?
- No. Correcting a reading changes the text, never the ink. What you wrote stays the way you wrote it.
- What languages does it speak?
- Thinkblot is in 20 languages: English, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese. Arabic and Hebrew read right to left.
On iPhone Duo
- What's different on the foldable iPhone?
-
- Folded, your notebooks are covers, one to the screen. Swipe between them. Unfold, and the cover you left showing opens.
- Unfolded, the toolbar sits in the vertical bar, out of the way of your hand, and Curiosity notebooks open on their wide canvas.
- Blot notebooks are only on iPhone Duo. Draw on one half of the page, fold the phone shut and open it again (or tap Fold), and the ink presses across the crease like a real inkblot. One undo takes it back.
Your data
- Can anyone read my notebooks?
- Only you. They're read on your device and kept in your own iCloud. If you allow Private Cloud Compute, Apple's servers help with the few things a phone can't do alone, and keep nothing. The privacy page lists every place anything can go.
- How do I delete my data?
-
- A notebook: long-press it on the shelf, or open its settings, and choose Delete notebook. It's removed from every device.
- Everything in iCloud: in iOS Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then Manage Storage, choose Thinkblot, and delete its data.
- Everything on a device: delete the app.
- The waitlist: write to hello@thinkblot.app.
- My notebooks aren't syncing.
- Check that each device is signed in to the same Apple Account, that iCloud is on for Thinkblot (iOS Settings, your name, iCloud), and that the device is online. Opening the app pulls the latest changes.
